The Decemberists aus Portland/Oregon beziehen ihren Namen aus der Stimmung desselben Monats bzw. von den Dezemberisten.
Eventuell wurden sie von den russischen Revolutionären inspieriert, denn sie vertrieben ihr selbstprdiziertes Video über BitTorrent - eine völlig neue Idee, die u.a die Arctic Monkeys zu Ruhm verhelfen sollte.
Im März '05 wurde ihr Kleinbus geklaut - mitsamt Instrumenten und Merchandise Artikeln, sodass die Band zu Spenden über z.B. eBay aufriefen. Mit neuem Equipment und neuem Mut, begannen sie ihren Siegeszug in der Musikszene.
