Devendra Banhart ist Teil und Mitinitiator der New-Weird-American-Movement.
Seine Eltern waren selbst begeisterte Indienfans und gaben ihrem Sprößling einen typisch indischen Namen.
Im Alter von 2 zog er mit seiner Mutter nach Venezuela, dass ihn entscheidend prägte. Er speilte bereits mit 12 Jahren erste Song sund begann intensivst Texte zu schreiben.
Nach jahrelangen Irrwegen durch die USA und Europa, wurde er in Paris entdeckt und startete seine musikalische Karriere.
