Iron & Wine findet seine Personalunion in dem aus Florida stammenden Amerikaner Sam Beam.
Sein Name leitet sich aus einer Nahrungsergänzung ab, die "Beef Iron & Wine" hieß.
Beam ist ein Multitalent: er schrieb, produzierte und spielte sein erstes Album selbst ein und all dies auch noch in seinem eigenen Studio daheim. Doch mit diesem Longplayer konnte er bereits so viel Symphatie gewinnen, dass das Label "Sub-Pop" es ein weiteres Mal veröffentlichte.
Seine von Akustikgitarren, Banjos und Slide Gitarren geprägte Musik wird oft mit Simon & Garfunkel, Neil Young oder auch mit Nick Drake verglichen.
Ob man Beams Musik als Alternative County, Indie-Folk oder auch als Progressive Folk bezeichnen möchte, tut nichts zur Sache, denn die Sache ist die Musik, die sowohl fürs Herz, als auch für die Ohren sind.
