Die Band aus Nebraska wurde 1997 gegründet. Nach dem Release vom Domestica - ein Konzeptalbum über Lügen, Hass und Trennungsgefühlen nach einer Scheidung - tourten sie zusammen mit At The Drive-In durch Amerika.
2001 kam die Cello Spielerin Gretta Cohn, die den Sound auf den Alben bis 2005 etwas tiefer und komplexer. Es folgten Touren mit The Cure oder auch Interpol.
